Rabies Awareness camp

A daylong twin programme was organized in the College of Veterinary Science, Assam Agricultural University, Khanapara, Guwahati – 781 022 to celebrate the 13th World Rabies Day on September 28, 2019 under the initiative of Dr (Mrs) Jyoti B Dutta, Professor, Veterinary Epidemiology & Preventive Medicine. Both the programmes were supported by AAUTA (VF), Blue Cross and Virbac Animal Health.

Commensurate with the theme of Day – ‘Vaccinate to Eliminate’, a free anti-rabies vaccination camp for the companion and stray dogs and cats was organized in the Veterinary Clinical Complex, under the supervision of Dr Dijen Kalita, In-Charge Director, assisted by the 4th year batch of BVSc & AH students.  The programme was inaugurated by Dr B N Saikia, Dean, Faculty of Veterinary Science, AAU, Khanapara. 

An outreach programme on Rabies Awareness was organized in the Lower Primary School at Nortap, Sonapur in collaboration with the Department of Health & Family Welfare and Department of Veterinary & Animal Husbandry, Govt.of Assam for the public of Greater Sonapur.  Resource persons namely Dr K K Sharma, Professor and Head, Veterinary Surgery & Radiology, Dr R K Sharma, Additional Director, Health & Family Welfare, Dr S A Laskar, State Veterinary Consultant, IDSP, Govt.of Assam participated in the programme which was attended by Dr Surajit Kalita, Senior Medical Officer of MPHC, Nortap and Dr Runu Das, District Disease Surveillance Officer along with other health officials and community workers.  The programme was facilitated by the Joint Directorate of Health Services, Govt.of Assam and was supervised by Dr Abhay Sharma, Senior Veterinary Officer and Dr Tapan Kumar Das, Block Veterinary Officer, Sonapur.  The students of the 5th year BVSc & AH and Postgraduate students under the guidance of Dr Deepa Lahkar, Assistant Professor assisted in the awareness programme for the target group.  The meeting was presided by Manik Boro, Headman of Nortap village.  The fruitful interactive programme on various aspects of rabies, post-bite care followed by vaccination to prevent death in human, livestock and companion animals ended with a vote of thanks from the Organizing Secretary. 

The 5th Year B.V.Sc. & AH and the Post-graduate students of the college also participated in an all India short educational Video competition on the theme 'Vaccinate to Eliminate' under the aegis of Consortium Against Rabies and IAPSM under guidance of Dr (Mrs.) Jyoti B.
