The Stepwise Approach towards Rabies Elimination (SARE) is a practical planning, monitoring and evaluation tool to guide, develop and refine rabies control programmes. It provides measurable steps, designed as a logical flow of activities, to progress from Stage 0 to Stage 5, in efforts towards freedom from dog-transmitted rabies.

 

A SARE score of 2.5 out of 5 signifies a country where a national rabies control programme being implemented nationwide, with clear inter-sectoral collaboration.

GARC supported the implementation of another strategic island-wide mass dog vaccination campaign. To this end, GARC donated 10,000 doses of rabies vaccine and expertise to ensure the success of the campaign. In addition, the Rabies Vaccination Tracker (RVT) tool was implemented to ensure quick and easy data collection by all vaccinators.

To increase dog owner participation during the 2022 mass dog vaccination campaign in Zanzibar, dogs were given bright collars that indicated that they had received their annual rabies vaccine. In February 2023, a knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) survey was conducted across the island to determine the benefits of using dog collars during vaccination campaigns. You can get all the details and more data by reading the full scientific study available here.

GARC supported the implementation of another strategic island-wide mass dog vaccination campaign. To this end, GARC donated 10,000 doses of rabies vaccine and expertise to ensure the success of the campaign. In addition to the ongoing use of the Rabies Vaccination Tracker (RVT) tool, yellow vaccination collars were given to every vaccinated dog to mark their vaccination status for a follow-up scientific study.

Animal health professionals in Unguja were trained in the implementation of the Rapid In-field Diagnosis and Epidemiology of Rabies” (RAIDER) toolkit to improve rabies surveillance across the island. In addition, GARC supported the implementation of the RAIDER toolkit by supplying high quality lateral flow devices for the diagnostic screening of samples in the field.

GARC further supported the island-wide strategic dog vaccination campaign through the provision of sets of animal handling equipment, training on the use of the equipment and additional offline educational training, which resulted in 16 people receiving their Animal Handling and Vaccination Certificate (AVC).
