Event Report World Rabies Day

World Rabies Day was Celebrated in Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CUVAS), Bahawalpur on September 27, 2019 by the collaborative efforts of ORIC and Department of Meat Technology. On the Eve of WRD a seminar is conducted regarding “One Health Approach to Control Rabies” and an awareness walk was arranged to promote the OIE and Global Alliance for Rabies Control slogans, “Vaccinate the Dog, Rabies Ends Here” and “Rabies: Vaccinate to Eradicate” respectively. A large number of faculty members and students of CUVAS participated in both the segments of the event by actively interacting with the distinct speakers. Two representatives of District health authority Bahawalpur, Dr. Khalid Mehmood (Technologist), Dr. Fiaz Ahmed (MS THQ Yazman) and two Veterinarians from CUVAS Dr. Syed Zahid Ali Shah (Assistant Prof.) and Dr. Tariq Abbas (Associate Prof.) jointly addressed the participants of seminar. Dr. Syed Zahid Ali Shah spoke about the pathogenesis of rabies and how rabies can be spread from different species of animal addressing the general public perception that only dogs are responsible for rabies. He also talked about the diagnostic procedures of rabies in animals i.e. different testing techniques and different quarantine periods for cases in different scenarios. Dr. Khalid Mehmood talked about the preventive measures that Govt. of the Punjab has taken to control stray dog population, to reduce dog bites and spread of rabies. He urged that there is a strong need of veterinarian in the stray dog population control policy making committees at district and provincial level to make the process more effective and humane with long lasting effects. Dr. Fiaz Ahmed talked about the curative aspects of Rabies and explained the post bite curative measures that should be taken by patient and the options available with the District Health Authority’s Basic Health Units and Tehsil Head Quarters. He also described the procedure of injecting Hyper Immune Globulins locally in surroundings of dog bite and explained the post bite vaccination schedule. Dr. Tariq Abbas in the end summed up the whole discussion and talked about the role veterinarians can play regarding rabies control. He concluded seminar by giving vote of thanks to the guest speakers and audience. In the end certificates were distributed among speakers by Dr. Abdul Ghaffar (Prof. Zoology CUVAS).

After the seminar an awareness walk was arranged in which faculty and students participated holding the banner having slogans regarding Rabies Vaccination and control.
