A walk on World Rabies Day at UVAS

Celebration of World Rabies Day is a regular event at the University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (UVAS), Lahore (Pakistan). This day is typically celebrated with a walk to raise awareness about rabies, which is followed by a few talks on the importance of this disease. Various Students’ Clubs and Societies take an active part in celebrating this day. Additionally, a vaccination camp is organized by the Pet Center of the university.

This year a special training session has been organized for DVM undergraduate students and professionals from 13th through 17th September for hands-on training on safe handling of stray dogs, vaccinating them and neutering of adult male dogs for creating a “Rabies Free Lahore”. In this respect, a pilot project has already been conducted by Indus Hospital in collaboration with Karachi metropolitan and now a similar pilot project is being initiated at Lahore with the collaborated efforts of UVAS and the Indus Hospital. Vaccine for vaccination of stray dogs would be made available by Dr. Naseem Salah-ud-Din of Indus Hospital, Karachi, who has got reasonable number of rabies vaccine doses under the auspices of World Health Organization.
