Rabies awareness and prevention in the Philippines starts at the grassroots with activities in schools and Barangay (Village) Health Workers (BHWs) helping out with the province’s program.
We met a passionate BHW who was helping register vaccinated dogs in the communities and a school teacher who spoke of the importance of children gaining knowledge at an early age of how to avoid dog bites and what to do if they are bitten.

Panaghoy sa Bulan (Mourning in Bulan) (FULL VERSION)

There’s nothing dignified about a human dying of canine-rabies, especially when it’s a 9-year old boy.

In Bulan, Sorsogon, Philippines, we met a mother whose son died from rabies after a dog bite and a Tandok (traditional healer) who believes that God heals sick people through her abilities. We also met a theatre group who approach rabies awareness through stage plays and a doctor who explains how the local governments work with the Tandoks to implement rabies prevention programmes while being respectful of the province’s culture and traditions.
