The Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) Delta State in collaboration with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Delta State in the spirit of “One Health Initiative” successfully marked the 2016 World Rabies Day at Excel Hotel, Asaba on 28th September, 2016. The occasion was chaired by the State Commissioner of Agriculture, who was represented by the Director of Veterinary Services, Dr. Diai C. O. He was ably supported by Dr. Sam Okpokpor, a Vet and Former Head of Service of the State; a representative of State Controller of Prisons; Dr. Ehilebo Iresoa A.; Mr. Felix Igbekoyi, State Vice Chairman, Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) and Dr. Wilson Louis, representing the State Chairman of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), who was in a labour related meeting with the Governor of the State. The events of the day included: opening ceremony with addresses from the State Commissioner of Agriculture and the State Chairman, NVMA Delta; two expository lecture sessions anchored by a vet, Dr. Uwagie-Ero E.A. fcvsn and a medic, Dr. Akin Owolabi, a consultant with Federal Medical Centre, Asaba with topics on “Rabid Animal as a Public Health Challenge: Prevention and Control” and “Rabies in Human: Implications and Management” respectively. There was also free vaccination of dogs. It will be pertinent to mention that NMA collaborated both financially and in attendance. They equally considered the lectures as points for resident doctors that attended. Also present, were executives and members of other associations and unions such as the: Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Medical and Health Worker Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN) and Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ).
