The Regional Veterinary Hospital & Epidemiology Center, Phuentsholing, Thromde Health sector & Hospital, Phuentsholing and District Health sector and Hospital Samtse has implemented the following activities for observation of World Rabies Day 2023. The program activities is joint organization and coordination between field human and animal health professionals (One Health Approach).
- Training of school health coordinators on rabies in human and animal. The health coordinators will further organize awareness event in their respective schools on 28th September.
- Sensitization on Rabies to regional heads, private agencies, Industries workers, armed forces, monastic/Dratshang, institutions on 28th September.
- Sensitization on Rabies to high risk communities/villages and key stakeholders on 29th September in rabies endemic zone
- Mass dog anti-rabies vaccination at strategic point and ambulatory clinic vaccination
The program was planned as per the lessons learned from recent rabies outbreaks in the region during which it was observed that the local community & educated people lacked proper knowledge on Rabies. This may be attributed to change in population dynamic, shift of focus away from disease during the COVID-19 pandemic-lack of rabies related awareness over the last 4-5 years. The last major Rabies awareness was conducted in 2018-19.
