World Rabies Day 2024 Observation in Phuentsholing Bhutan

A joint program has been planned by Phuentsholing General Hospital and the Regional Veterinary Hospital and Epidemiology Center (RVH & EC), Phuentsholing, to coordinate rabies education for schools located in rabies-endemic zones. A session on "Rabies" will be held in five schools within Phuentsholing Thromde and two schools in nearby areas. The target audience includes schoolchildren aged 5-18 and teachers. A quiz competition on rabies will also be organized among the schools. The program is scheduled for the 27th and 28th of September 2024.

On the 28th of September, RVH & EC will provide anti-rabies vaccinations for pet animals at the hospital. Additionally, a mass anti-rabies vaccination for free-roaming dogs in the border town will be organized in the first week of October 2024.

In 2023, Phuentsholing General Hospital and RVH & EC trained school health coordinators on rabies, who then educated students about rabies during classroom sessions as part of World Rabies Day 2023. Around 24,000 students and 5,000 locals were educated on rabies across two districts in 2023. An ambulatory anti-rabies vaccination drive was conducted on the 28th of September 2023. The team also sensitized regional offices, locals, private firms, and key agencies on rabies prevention and collaboration during rabies outbreaks in the border districts.
