
South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) organized mass vaccination camps & public talks against rabies on the eve of World Rabies Day, celebrated on 28 September 2019 in participation with NCDC (National Centre for Communicable Disease) & other stakeholders namely private veterinary practitioners, NGOs & Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) to improve animal welfare & educate them on zoonosis in the society. This day is also celebrated to commemorate in the memory of the father of modern-day vaccination Mr Louis Pasteur.
A string of events was organised, right from vaccination of pets & stray dogs to awareness programmes for school children. The mainstay was the "One Health" approach with effective intersectoral cooperation from multiple agencies including those of animal & public health as key to eliminating this disease. During the drive, a total of 502 dogs were vaccinated against rabies and as part of the drive a total of 17 dog vans were pressed into usage.
As per WHO estimates of the 60,000-death reported due to rabies, about 36% of which i.e. (20,000- 21,000) are reported from India. A rabid single dog is capable of biting a large number of human beings and animals and the number of victions can be about 80-90 and can run in zig-zag directions up to 40-45 Kms in the span of clinical symptoms, the incubation period of Rabies may be as short as 10 days & averaging incubation period is 30-90 days
South Delhi Municipal Corporation as part of greater public good, will take more such campaigns and public talks to spread awareness about the most dreaded disease in the world i.e. Rabies.
