
Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary services Karnataka state AND the state Veterinary Association, Bengaluru jointly organized a week long drive for prevention and control of rabies in Bengaluru Rural District. The events comprised of mass vaccination of ownerless dogs against rabies and educating school children about rabies. All the primary veterinary health care centers, Veterinary hospitals and veterinary dispensaries of Bengaluru Rural district participated in this drive.
Dr. N. Jagadish kumar,deputy director of the district supervised the week long programme. Dr. A. Ramesh the president of the district chapter of Karnataka veterinary association, Dr, C.N. Narayanaswamy, the patron monitored the day to day activities in the district.
The week long drive was followed by a seminar on Rabies conducted at the district panchayat auditorium at Beerasandra, on 22nd Sept 2023.
The seminar was attended by about 200 practicing Vets, medical and public health professionals and members of the general public and a host of senior deputy directors of animal health in the district.
Dr. Nidaghatta Gangadhar , a senior scientist in zoonosis, Bengaluru delivered the key note address on Rabies.
The address highlighted the highly infectious nature of rabies, transmissibility particularly between dogs and man , some of the latest approaches in its control and prevention and importance of creating awareness among the public. Some Dos and Donts for Vets, medical personnel and public were also discussed.
It served as a good platform for exchange of information between the Vets and the speaker as the practicing Vets sought clarifications for their doubts in day to day practice. The role of GARC, WHO, FAO , World Organization for Animal health , CDC and other global agencies in realizing the target of ”Zero dog mediated rabies deaths by 2030” was in focus
The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. N. Shivashankar , Indian Administrative Services (I A S), the district collector.
Ms. K. N. Anuradha I A S , the chief Executive officer of the district (called Zilla Panchayat), and Dr. ShivaSharanappa Yelgoud president Karnataka Veterinary Association Bengaluru were the guests of honor.
