As a member country of the OIE, Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) supports the OIE initiative of World Rabies Day. Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) was recognized as one of the rabies-free countries from 1961 to June 2013; the free status was lost when the rabies virus was detected in the “targeted wildlife pathogen surveillance” in 2013. As of 28 Sep. 2016, the majority of the rabies cases are confirmed in ferret-badger (548 cases), only one rabid dog case was confirmed, in which it was bitten by rabid ferret-badger. In order to prevent wildlife rabies virus from being introduced into the dog and cat population, the competent authority conducts enforced and mass rabies vaccination. Taking the strategies of communication and punishment, the vaccination rate for pets which live close to wildlife is over 90%; others reach 70%. The competent authority, Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine (BAPHIQ), taking the opportunity of the World Rabies Day, invites the local governments to co-host the vaccination campaign. The traditional media and social media are useful tools to remind the importance of rabies vaccination to the public.
