The "Protecting People and Pets:  Rabies Awareness and Vaccination Drive" is a crucial initiative aimed at addressing rabies in Kibondo District, including the Nduta and Nyarugusu refugee camps. This comprehensive event is designed to implement a multi-faceted approach to rabies prevention and control, featuring several key activities:

  • Educational Outreach: The project will provide rabies prevention and control education to 15,000 residents, including those in the Nduta and Nyarugusu refugee camps. Additionally, 20 primary schools within both the host community and the refugee camps will receive targeted educational programs to raise awareness among students and staff.
  • Vaccination Campaign: A primary focus of the event is the vaccination of 23,000 dogs against rabies. Vaccination booths will be established at strategic locations to ensure broad access for pet owners throughout the targeted areas.
  • Training Programs: The project will train 1,000 community health workers and volunteers in effective rabies management and response techniques. This training is aimed at enhancing local capabilities for sustained rabies control.
  • Materials Distribution: To support educational efforts, the project will distribute a variety of materials, including flyers, posters, and informational brochures. These materials will reinforce rabies prevention messages and engage the community.
  • Logistical Coordination: The event will involve setting up and maintaining vaccination booths, coordinating transportation for equipment and personnel, and managing other logistical needs to ensure smooth operations.
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: The initiative will include ongoing monitoring to assess vaccination coverage, the effectiveness of educational outreach, and the impact of training programs. Feedback will be collected to evaluate the project's success and identify opportunities for improvement and the event aims to significantly reduce the incidence of rabies and enhance public health outcomes through targeted education, comprehensive vaccination efforts, and robust community engagement.
