The Government of Karnataka through the Department of animal husbandry and Veterinary services and the District chapter of the Karnataka Veterinary association, Chitra Durga celebrated the World Rabies day on 25th and 26th Sept at Chitra Durga.
The event was marked by free anti rabies vaccination of dogs on 25th, and 26th. inaugurated by Ms. Vinotha Priya, the Deputy commissioner of the District. 180 various breeds of dogs availed the benefit of free vaccination. M/S Boehringer Ingelheim , Mumbai provided their reputed brand of rabies vaccine “ Rabisin “ for vaccination free of cost.
The vaccination drive was conducted under the supervision of Dr. T. Krishnappa, the Deputy Director of animal husbandry and Veterinary Services Chitradurga and ably supported by a team of experienced Vets Dr . Prasanna Kumar, Asst Director (AH) and President of the Karnataka Veterinary association Chitra Durga , Dr. O.N.Ravi, Dr. G.M. Hanumappa, Dr. Parameshwara Naik, Dr. H M. Kiran, and Dr. B.N. Thimmanna. Asst Directors of Animal Husbandry respectively of Challakere , Hiriyur, Holal kere, Hosadurga, and Molakal moru taluks (Provinces) and a team of veterinary officers and supporting staff.
A rabies awareness program was conducted on 26th Sept 2019. Deputy commissioner Ms. Vinotha Priya inaugurated the seminar by lighting the conventional lamp. Dr. C Thippeswamy, Asst. Director welcomed the gathering and Dr. B. Prasanna kumar was the master of ceremony.
Dr. N.L. Gangadhar, Senior Scientist (Zoonosis) delivered the key note address on the history, , epidemiology, pathogenesis, incubation period and the course of the disease and atypical cases of Rabies and other aspects of the infection. The interaction that followed was very productive with the practicing Vets raising several issues they had faced in the course of their practice. The long acting anti Rabies Vaccine “ RABISIN “ attracted a few curious queries.
Deputy commissioner Ms. Vinotha Priya spoke on the responsibility of dog owners in safeguarding the health of the society by getting the anti Rabies vaccination to their dogs and to avoid risks to the public . She also urged the Municipal officers and staff present in the audience to take appropriate and timely action to avoid the stray dog menace in the district.
Dr.G.T. Renu Prasad , the district surveillance officer spoke and detailed on the facilities available in the Health Department in providing medical care to dog bite patients and for providing post bite immunization.
The program was a big success on account of the policy makers at the district, and at the two other municipality levels, health and Veterinary authorities, and district environment engineer, were all present under one banner. The inter department issues relating to Zero Rabies and public safety were discussed.

Mahantesh, Municipal Commissioner Hiriyur, Mr. Umesh , Chief officer Town Panchayat, Hosadurga, Mr. Jaffer, Environment engineer, Chitradurga, Hanumantha Rayappa, Prsident Instt. Of agricultural Technology, Chitradurga, Mr. J. Thippeswamy, the secretary, Dr. Rudresh Epidemiologist.and a a contingent of press correspondents headed by the District information and publicity officer Mr. TukaRam Rao
This success was largely possible due to efforts of Dr. K.V. Halagappa, Additional Director Dept of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services, Karnataka state.
