Dr Soumaya Ben Chehida is the Director of the Directorate for the Protection of the Urban Environment, Municipality of Tunis. She is part of a team that has moved the municipality from the killing of stray dogs to vaccination, sterilisation and release.
A new veterinary clinic was opened in May by the Municipality of Tunis, following a workshop on stray dog control organised with the support of the OIE (funded by the European Union) and in collaboration with Veterinary Services of Tunisia.
It is expected that an accord between the Municipality of Tunis and the Ministry of Agriculture will expand prerogatives of this centre to establish a permanent unit for the anti-rabies vaccination of domestic dogs.
